Where are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I’m currently on placement at Shop Direct (based at the HQ in Liverpool) which is the UK’s second largest pureplay digital retailer, who own the companies Very, Very Exclusive & Littlewoods. My placement role is titled ‘Talent Intern’ and I sit within the People Team where all development and internal communication happens for the business as well as recruitment, employee relations & reward.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind? What types of roles did you apply for?

I was focused on getting a placement in marketing as this is what my degree is related to however, as time went on during my search, I kept an open mind and read through many job descriptions and realised that I shouldn’t limit myself to marketing alone as there are so many fantastic opportunities in marketing as well as in other sectors and industries. I applied for roles in marketing, digital marketing, HR, sales & supply chain.

In our latest blog we hear from Damilola Fatayo, BA (Hons) Human Resource Management. Read her placement story and advice here…

Damilola Fatayo

Hello, my name is Dami, I am a currently on a placement here in Manchester.  I want to talk about my experience prior to getting a placement.

So, from the first year of my degree I knew a placement would be beneficial in securing a job, post-graduation. However, I was not expecting the process to be as challenging as it was.  But, I got so much help from the Placement Team and I would not have got my placement without their guidance so THANK YOU!

Having all the deadlines to think about, coupled with the activities of student life, it can be difficult managing application deadlines as well. However, my advice is to make time and give it a go! Life is too short anyways I am so glad I decided to put in the effort, take a placement and gain valuable experience. (more…)

What is it really like working for a Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) organisation?

Placement student KimberleyMy name is Kimberley Hargreaves, and I am studying a BA Hons Human Resource Management here at MMU. I have recently completed a 12 month industrial placement within the HR function at Unilever– a Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) organisation. I was based at their UK head office in Leatherhead, Surrey.

I undertook a project based role where I got to lead projects across the spectrum of HR, from designing and delivering events for the attraction and selection of Unilever’s future graduates and placement students, to working with a local charity in delivering mock interviews to people with disabilities to enhance their interview skills and support them in gaining employment. I also supported Unilevers’ HR reps across all UK and Ireland sites to deliver inductions to their new employees. These are just a few main examples of the variety of projects I was able to get involved in. (more…)
