A Placement Year has been one of the Best Decisions I have made!

This post sees BA(Hons) Public Relations and Digital Communications Management student Lorna Mowbray give her account of her first six months on placement with Manchester based advertising agency Red C. Read on for some placement inspiration!

My first six months on placement at Red C

If anyone had told me this time last year I’d be working for an advertising agency, I wouldn’t have believed them.

When I started university, I was undecided about taking a placement year, but after speaking to students who’d just finished their placements, I knew it’d be a great opportunity.

My first month at Red C was overwhelming but very exciting! I said goodbye to student life and hello to nine to five (thirty). I remember thinking that I was never going to be able to remember and understand everything, but after a few weeks of easing into my new role with the help of my friendly and welcoming team members, everything started to fit into place.

In my first six months at Red C I’ve been extremely lucky to work with a range of clients such as JD Williams, Welcome Cottages and GRJ and Rail Discoveries. I’ve enjoyed the responsibilities I’ve been given, including managing production of artwork, carrying out detailed research, briefing in new work to the creative department… and even making cups of tea! One of the most exciting opportunities I’ve had so far was attending a shoot for a TV ad.

My Placement Year with Disney: A dream come true!

Time for another inspiring placement story! This post shares Amy Smith’s (Ba (Hons) Advertising Management & Brand Management) top tips and insights into her placement search, experience of assessment days and interviews, and her current time spent on placement with Disney!

Where are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I am currently on placement at the Walt Disney Company in Hammersmith, London. I am the Media Planning and Presentation Intern for Disney Junior in the Central Eastern European Emerging Markets. Amy Smith - DisneyWhen you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind? 

Ever since a child I have had a big love for Disney and my dream was to one day work for the company. But due to the scale of the company and my lack of self-belief I applied for L’Oreal, Rimmel, Carat, MEC and many more… I applied for a visual merchandising role, PPC role, Marketing role and finally my Media Planning role at Disney.

I always wanted to work within the Advertising/Marketing sector and when I applied for my degree at MMU I knew Disney were one of the companies that MMU advertised sandwich year placements for.

Don’t Underestimate The Importance of Work Experience

In our latest student blog Beth Henderson, BA (Hons) Public Relations and Digital Communications, currently on placement as Content and Outreach Executive at Return on Digital explains the value of work experience.  Read about some of her experiences whilst applying for placements and her advice if you are unsure about applying for a placement year.

It had been drilled into me throughout second year, and in fact first year, that building my CV with quality experience was going to make me stand out from the crowd, make the employer of my dreams see only me in a room of 100 applicants, help me take that first step onto my ideal career path.

However, after being one of the first students to secure a place for Agency Life, and at an amazing digital marketing agency, Return on Digital, I was quick to shrug off the pressure to transform my standard, run of the mill CV into something so exciting it makes every employer’s hearts race.

This didn’t last long. When it came to applying for placements, I realised that what my lecturers had been telling me for the last two years, was in fact the truth – fancy that! (more…)
