Your Placement Search – The Road to Success!

#Resilience #YouCanDoIt #Dedication #Motivation #TheLongGame #StickWithIt

So it’s that time of year when students are busily applying for placements for 16/17. We are still adding lots of exciting placement opportunities on CareerHub, such as, SIEMENS, KELLOGGS, NISSAN.

Your perfect placement is just around the corner!

Easter Holidays – Have you lost a bit of placement focus?  Feeling a bit disheartened having been for a few interviews? This is common at this stage of the year and the Placement team are here to help get you back on track! Everyone is at a different stage of the process, so even if you are just starting out on your placement search, be sure to use the Easter holidays to get some applications in.  Are you still in Manchester over Easter?  If so, come and see us.  If not, we are more than happy to help via email.

Time line – Right now is a great time to apply for placements. Some hard work now will really pay off!  You have until end of August to secure a placement and we will help you get there.  Hopefully you will have almost submitted any assessments for other modules, so this will free up some time for your placement search.

Finance – During your placement year, you will pay fees of £680.  You can still apply to Student Finance England for your Maintenance Loan if you wish.  If you don’t end up doing a placement year, you will simply need to advise Student Finance that you need to arrange a ‘Change of Circumstance’.  This is very straight forward and shouldn’t be a concern at this stage.

Accommodation – Are you already starting to think about accommodation for next year?  Ideally, we would like you to keep your placement location options as wide as possible, so don’t limit opportunities unless you really need to.  If you must – there will still be lots of accessible placements in the Greater Manchester/Cheshire area.  So this shouldn’t be too much of a barrier.

Own Placements – Are you using your own networks to search for placements?  LinkedIn, Parents, Family Friends etc can provide useful placements leads.  Let us know if you want any information to share with potential placement providers!

Working at PUMA has been one of the coolest experiences of my life so far!

The opportunities are endless and the people that I have got to know and have been able to learn from have been awesome. You really feel part of the team at PUMA and are never looked at differently because of the ‘intern’ status.

When I started PUMA had just moved offices to the brand new Sea Containers which is situated right on the Thames in Central London. Although I have been living at home in Bedfordshire and commuting every day, I have still been able to live the London life. (more…)

‘The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ – Lao Tsu

In this blog Clifford Butau, BA (Hons) Sports Marketing Management, describes his placement journey: from the application stage in 2nd year through to working in an office having secured a placement and onto planning for the future.

Placement student, Clifford Butau

My employer is a rapidly growing business, producing a range of convenience food products for the retail markets in Ireland, the UK and Europe.  I embarked on my journey here towards the end of summer and believed myself to be very fortunate to get my placement because I had been applying for different placements throughout second year and summer. Notwithstanding my efforts I kept getting the “unfortunately you did not get the placement, but good luck with your search” feedback – yes those disappointing words we might have all experienced in the hunt.

Nevertheless, I was very determined to take that single step to build experience and I carried on with my quest to find a placement.  The persistence finally paid off one afternoon when I received an email that would kick-start my journey. The email was an invite for an interview at the company’s HQ and after the interview, I was invited for a stage two interview that involved a task, which I happily completed and was very pleased when I was offered the role. Placement searching: a student’s guide

In our latest blog Alice Sharpe, BA (Hons) Sports Management and Marketing, offers her top tips to help you in your placement search.  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Hi I’m Alice,  a 20 year old Triathlete studying Sports Management and Marketing here at Manchester Metropolitan University. I’m currently on a placement year at Manchester City Council, where I am working as part of the Major Sports Events team. I’m really enjoying seeing my passion for sport turn into a career.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed when searching for a placement so here are MY top tips;

  1. Start looking early:

Think of what sort of job field you would like to go into, check you have the right sort of experience. If you don’t you will have started early enough to go and get this experience. Look for volunteering opportunities via the Union’s Volunteer bureau; it’s a fantastic resource and a chance to network! You never know who you might meet. (more…)
