Placement Life at MEC: Not only useful for the future but a lot of fun!

If your placement search hasn’t quite panned out as you hoped yet, don’t worry!

Our latest blog post follows Economics student Jess Vasey on her journey through her own placement search, and is a brilliant example of how the skills you have built up so far in your degree may take you in a direction you haven’t anticipated yet!

Jess VaseyWhere are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I am on placement at MEC Manchester and I work in the Analytics and Insight Department as a Media Trainee.

This involves providing insights into data to help other teams with pitch work for new and existing clients so they understand their audience better and can generate ideas that are proved to be successful.

My role also involves measuring the performance of previous and running campaigns.

It also involves streamlining any reports and making them more efficient. We try to make day to day jobs as quick and automated as possible.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind?

When I first started searching for placements I was determined to achieve an economic consultant role. However, as there were only a few specific employers offering this role very early on in the academic year and this is a hard placement to achieve, once I was rejected I started looking into fields that would help me one day achieve an economic consultancy role and found that I would need experience in data analysis.

Even if the job is not the one you really wanted, finding a placement that will build skills for that role in future is extremely useful.

I study Economics and have ended up working in a media agency which I never thought would have happened at the beginning of the year. (more…)

Your Placement Search – The Road to Success!

#Resilience #YouCanDoIt #Dedication #Motivation #TheLongGame #StickWithIt

So it’s that time of year when students are busily applying for placements for 16/17. We are still adding lots of exciting placement opportunities on CareerHub, such as, SIEMENS, KELLOGGS, NISSAN.

Your perfect placement is just around the corner!

Easter Holidays – Have you lost a bit of placement focus?  Feeling a bit disheartened having been for a few interviews? This is common at this stage of the year and the Placement team are here to help get you back on track! Everyone is at a different stage of the process, so even if you are just starting out on your placement search, be sure to use the Easter holidays to get some applications in.  Are you still in Manchester over Easter?  If so, come and see us.  If not, we are more than happy to help via email.

Time line – Right now is a great time to apply for placements. Some hard work now will really pay off!  You have until end of August to secure a placement and we will help you get there.  Hopefully you will have almost submitted any assessments for other modules, so this will free up some time for your placement search.

Finance – During your placement year, you will pay fees of £680.  You can still apply to Student Finance England for your Maintenance Loan if you wish.  If you don’t end up doing a placement year, you will simply need to advise Student Finance that you need to arrange a ‘Change of Circumstance’.  This is very straight forward and shouldn’t be a concern at this stage.

Accommodation – Are you already starting to think about accommodation for next year?  Ideally, we would like you to keep your placement location options as wide as possible, so don’t limit opportunities unless you really need to.  If you must – there will still be lots of accessible placements in the Greater Manchester/Cheshire area.  So this shouldn’t be too much of a barrier.

Own Placements – Are you using your own networks to search for placements?  LinkedIn, Parents, Family Friends etc can provide useful placements leads.  Let us know if you want any information to share with potential placement providers!

Studying Economics? Apply here…

If you’re looking for a placement that will let you put what you’re learning at university into practice Rachel Bentham, BA (Hons) Economics, explains why you should follow in her footsteps.

Placement student, Rachel Bentham

The main thing I have to say about placement is APPLY APPLY APPLY! Although I’m only a few months in, I already know it has 100% been the right decision for me, and although sometimes getting up at 6:30 5 times a week isn’t great, the experience makes  it more than worthwhile.

I’m an Economics student and my placement is with BASF, who although you may never have heard of- I hadn’t- they are the biggest chemical company in the world (and have UK offices that just happen to be based in Cheadle, which is a definite bonus for anyone looking for a placement in the North West). My job title is a Market Analysis Assistant, and I’m one of 3 interns based in the UK, although there are many more throughout Europe. (more…)
