Now is the perfect time to get ahead of your friends and start to prepare for a placement. Nobody is expecting a 4 page essay on the perfect job but there are some (not too challenging) things that you can be doing to put you in good stead for securing a placement.

What was your favourite part of first year? (Friday nights not included)
First year is over and it’s time to decide what you liked and what you didn’t. Spending some time to think about the kind of subjects you are interested in will help influence the kind of job you are looking for. Even if you haven’t enjoyed certain parts of your course, it’s not wasted. At least you now know what you don’t enjoy. Remember, you don’t have to be certain about the direction in which you take your career but doing the things you enjoy will help! (more…)

Placement life: Inside Intel

In our latest post, Marketing Management student Cristian Filip gives us the inside scoop on placement life at the global giant Intel.

Where are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I am currently on placement at Intel Corporation in Shannon, Ireland. I work as a Marketing and Operations Intern, being a member of the NPG Market Development team.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind?

When I started looking for a placement, I didn’t have a specific company or role in mind. However, I knew that I wanted to spend my placement year in a multinational corporation, interact with as many business professionals as possible (from all over the world) and work in a Business role.cristian-filip

Why did you choose the sandwich placement route for your course, rather than the three-year option?

I decided to opt for the sandwich placement route because I felt that I would improve my existing skills, and develop new skills, as well as gaining relevant experience in the Business sector. Before I joined Intel I did an Agency Life Internship (at I-COM Manchester) that helped me understand how important it is to put in to practice what I learned at University, gaining new skills that can be transferred into any job role in the future.

Also, I realized that the Business/Marketing industry is a very competitive one and that a Placement at an international company could boost my CV and support me in differentiating myself from other candidates, when applying for a graduate position.

Your Placement Search – The Road to Success!

#Resilience #YouCanDoIt #Dedication #Motivation #TheLongGame #StickWithIt

So it’s that time of year when students are busily applying for placements for 16/17. We are still adding lots of exciting placement opportunities on CareerHub, such as, SIEMENS, KELLOGGS, NISSAN.

Your perfect placement is just around the corner!

Easter Holidays – Have you lost a bit of placement focus?  Feeling a bit disheartened having been for a few interviews? This is common at this stage of the year and the Placement team are here to help get you back on track! Everyone is at a different stage of the process, so even if you are just starting out on your placement search, be sure to use the Easter holidays to get some applications in.  Are you still in Manchester over Easter?  If so, come and see us.  If not, we are more than happy to help via email.

Time line – Right now is a great time to apply for placements. Some hard work now will really pay off!  You have until end of August to secure a placement and we will help you get there.  Hopefully you will have almost submitted any assessments for other modules, so this will free up some time for your placement search.

Finance – During your placement year, you will pay fees of £680.  You can still apply to Student Finance England for your Maintenance Loan if you wish.  If you don’t end up doing a placement year, you will simply need to advise Student Finance that you need to arrange a ‘Change of Circumstance’.  This is very straight forward and shouldn’t be a concern at this stage.

Accommodation – Are you already starting to think about accommodation for next year?  Ideally, we would like you to keep your placement location options as wide as possible, so don’t limit opportunities unless you really need to.  If you must – there will still be lots of accessible placements in the Greater Manchester/Cheshire area.  So this shouldn’t be too much of a barrier.

Own Placements – Are you using your own networks to search for placements?  LinkedIn, Parents, Family Friends etc can provide useful placements leads.  Let us know if you want any information to share with potential placement providers!

Success Story: From Placement to Graduate Role!

Today’s post is a perfect example of how a placement  year offers much more opportunity than simply work experience.  Lynn from the Placements Team picked the brains of MMU student Jenny Goddard, who completed her placement year with Lidl UK.  Jenny is now in the final year of her Ba (Hons) Business Management course, and is still benefitting from the boost her placement year has given her in regards to her studies and graduate job search.

Jenny Goddard - Lidl Placement Student

What course are you studying at MMU?

I’m a final year Business Management student. I completed a placement with Lidl UK and was based in their Regional Distribution Centre in Runcorn, Cheshire.

What were your key reasons for choosing the sandwich placement route?

As Business Management is a very competitive degree, I wanted to enhance my employability through obtaining a years experience within a multi-national organisation. I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to pursue upon graduation, so I wanted to utilise the year to help me decide which area of business I would find the most interesting.

Our blog post this week comes from Misbah Shikdar, a BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student currently on placement with Bosch. Here he gives us a glimpse into his daily role, as well as his tips for securing a placement with a market leading company.

Hi I’m Misbah, and I’m currently four months into my placement at Bosch UK as a Finance Assistant.

Misbah Ahmed

My job role requires me to assist my manager and team leader (who are both great) on different areas. I take part in various finance projects, as well as liaising with and providing guidance and advice to non-financial staff of the organisation. From the accounting side of things, my manager takes care of the financial aspects, whereas the team leader works on management accounting. Therefore, I am gaining invaluable experience on both sides of accounting which is perfect for me, and what a placement is all about.

Don’t let the big brand name scare you!

In this blog we hear from Ryan Sloan, BA (Hons) Business, who is currently working as a Marketing Intern for Nike. Ryan tells us how he sourced his placement and offers advice for anyone looking for a placement.

Placement student Ryan Sloan

A housemate initially sent me the role saying: “this is the role for you”. I  thought no way will I get a placement with Nike, surely they are looking for all the high flying students from red brick universities, this is a job I could only dream of. But, after much thought, I decided why not? I have nothing to lose; being sceptical I didn’t expect to get a response.

However, over the Easter period, while revising for summer exams I got a call from the Nike HR Dept. asking could I do a phone interview there and then? Of course I accepted…from this I got through to the assessment day which consisted of several presentations, some group work and finally a one on one interview with two line managers. The next day they called and told me I had got the job! I had finally secured a placement, I was speechless to be honest, and there is no other way to put it! (more…)
