Where are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I’m currently on placement at Shop Direct (based at the HQ in Liverpool) which is the UK’s second largest pureplay digital retailer, who own the companies Very, Very Exclusive & Littlewoods. My placement role is titled ‘Talent Intern’ and I sit within the People Team where all development and internal communication happens for the business as well as recruitment, employee relations & reward.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind? What types of roles did you apply for?

I was focused on getting a placement in marketing as this is what my degree is related to however, as time went on during my search, I kept an open mind and read through many job descriptions and realised that I shouldn’t limit myself to marketing alone as there are so many fantastic opportunities in marketing as well as in other sectors and industries. I applied for roles in marketing, digital marketing, HR, sales & supply chain.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind? What types of roles did you apply for?

I was very selective when applying for my placement, a lot of my friends seemed to apply for every opportunity that popped up, but it took me a while to find one I liked the look of! Anyone searching for a placement should keep their options open and step outside their comfort zone where possible, but stay true to the area that you want to work in so that your passion shines through.

Hello everyone!  My name is Jonny, a BA (Hons) International Business Management student and I am currently on my placement year at Microsoft as an EMEA Business Program Manager.

I wanted to write to you all out there who might be on course to find your perfect placement year and to give a little insight into my first 2 months at Microsoft.jonathan-foster

I started my Placement search in November and found my first Assessment Centre to be quite a challenge and wasn’t able to get a full offer – the experience was invaluable though and I learnt how to approach Assessment Centre’s and make the impact I wanted to, on the day.

My key tips for being successful and getting your first offer would be to never give up!

See every Assessment Centre as an opportunity to learn, grow and try new strategies.

Once you’ve mastered this you can then show your confidence and know-how to confidently make all the right moves to make a good impression with the recruiters.

Placement life: Inside Intel

In our latest post, Marketing Management student Cristian Filip gives us the inside scoop on placement life at the global giant Intel.

Where are you currently on placement, and what is your placement role?

I am currently on placement at Intel Corporation in Shannon, Ireland. I work as a Marketing and Operations Intern, being a member of the NPG Market Development team.

When you started searching for placements did you have a specific type of role in mind?

When I started looking for a placement, I didn’t have a specific company or role in mind. However, I knew that I wanted to spend my placement year in a multinational corporation, interact with as many business professionals as possible (from all over the world) and work in a Business role.cristian-filip

Why did you choose the sandwich placement route for your course, rather than the three-year option?

I decided to opt for the sandwich placement route because I felt that I would improve my existing skills, and develop new skills, as well as gaining relevant experience in the Business sector. Before I joined Intel I did an Agency Life Internship (at I-COM Manchester) that helped me understand how important it is to put in to practice what I learned at University, gaining new skills that can be transferred into any job role in the future.

Also, I realized that the Business/Marketing industry is a very competitive one and that a Placement at an international company could boost my CV and support me in differentiating myself from other candidates, when applying for a graduate position.

Your Placement Search – The Road to Success!

#Resilience #YouCanDoIt #Dedication #Motivation #TheLongGame #StickWithIt

So it’s that time of year when students are busily applying for placements for 16/17. We are still adding lots of exciting placement opportunities on CareerHub, such as, SIEMENS, KELLOGGS, NISSAN.

Your perfect placement is just around the corner!

Easter Holidays – Have you lost a bit of placement focus?  Feeling a bit disheartened having been for a few interviews? This is common at this stage of the year and the Placement team are here to help get you back on track! Everyone is at a different stage of the process, so even if you are just starting out on your placement search, be sure to use the Easter holidays to get some applications in.  Are you still in Manchester over Easter?  If so, come and see us.  If not, we are more than happy to help via email.

Time line – Right now is a great time to apply for placements. Some hard work now will really pay off!  You have until end of August to secure a placement and we will help you get there.  Hopefully you will have almost submitted any assessments for other modules, so this will free up some time for your placement search.

Finance – During your placement year, you will pay fees of £680.  You can still apply to Student Finance England for your Maintenance Loan if you wish.  If you don’t end up doing a placement year, you will simply need to advise Student Finance that you need to arrange a ‘Change of Circumstance’.  This is very straight forward and shouldn’t be a concern at this stage.

Accommodation – Are you already starting to think about accommodation for next year?  Ideally, we would like you to keep your placement location options as wide as possible, so don’t limit opportunities unless you really need to.  If you must – there will still be lots of accessible placements in the Greater Manchester/Cheshire area.  So this shouldn’t be too much of a barrier.

Own Placements – Are you using your own networks to search for placements?  LinkedIn, Parents, Family Friends etc can provide useful placements leads.  Let us know if you want any information to share with potential placement providers!

Success Story: From Placement to Graduate Role!

Today’s post is a perfect example of how a placement  year offers much more opportunity than simply work experience.  Lynn from the Placements Team picked the brains of MMU student Jenny Goddard, who completed her placement year with Lidl UK.  Jenny is now in the final year of her Ba (Hons) Business Management course, and is still benefitting from the boost her placement year has given her in regards to her studies and graduate job search.

Jenny Goddard - Lidl Placement Student

What course are you studying at MMU?

I’m a final year Business Management student. I completed a placement with Lidl UK and was based in their Regional Distribution Centre in Runcorn, Cheshire.

What were your key reasons for choosing the sandwich placement route?

As Business Management is a very competitive degree, I wanted to enhance my employability through obtaining a years experience within a multi-national organisation. I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to pursue upon graduation, so I wanted to utilise the year to help me decide which area of business I would find the most interesting.

From placement to graduate job offer

In this blog we hear from Max Harris, final year BA (Hons) Business Management, whose placement year led to a graduate job offer.

Hello everyone, my name is Max Harris and I completed my placement from July 2013 – August 2014. I will be returning to the company I worked for after university in May this year as a Regional Account Manager and have written a short blog relating to my experience.

The Company and Role

The company I worked for provides rapidly deployable surveillance cameras, they’re the market leader and work with hundreds of Local Authorities, Police Forces and Housing Associations in the UK, as well as with major national companies such as National Grid and Network Rail.

The role I held during the term of my placement was Business Development Executive. This was a sales role, and involved working alongside two Regional Account Managers to develop business in one of the company’s two main sectors. I was given an enormous amount of responsibility almost immediately; being in charge of identifying and developing new business opportunities nationwide with the goal of securing a meeting for one of the Regional Managers to attend.
