Inside View: The Placement Year at LateRooms.com

Today’s post is a spotlight on LateRooms.com, the Manchester based hotel booking company, where two keen MMU Ba (Hons) Marketing Management students are currently completing their placement years; Jade as a Content Executive and Kirsten as a Hotel Promotions Coordinator.

LateRooms.com’s Talent Partner Victoria Loughlin met with Jade and Kirsten to talk about their placement experience so far.

“So what have you both been doing during your placement?” I asked. Kirsten started, “My role is basically to coordinate between the Hotel Relationships team and the Marketing department to make sure that the right hotels are being pushed out for promotions on e-marketing campaigns, brand pages and panel ads. I report on trends and promotions which helps to monitor the response we have had from campaigns such as the January sale.”

And Jade? “At the moment I am part of the team that are responsible for on-boarding new hotels onto our site. The main part of the role is looking at our lapsed hotels and contacting them to find out why they are no longer on our site and then aiming to get them back online. For the last part of my placement I’ll be moving into the Content team where I will be responsible for looking into the hotel profiles on our site and then advising the hoteliers on how they can improve their content or images to attract more customers”

Sounds good so far! “So what does an average day look like for you both?” I asked. Jade continued, “Usually an average day for me involves making lots of calls to hoteliers. I’m pretty much on the phone 90% of the day so I get to find out lots about our different hotels” She looked at Kirsten who started, “For me an average day usually involved sending out a sponsored listing reminder to the Market Managers. I also usually send out emails weekly to update everybody on what deadlines are coming up. I liaise with the Design team quite a lot to make sure that the branding is correct on any panel ads or emails and then I also pull reports on the previous panel ads and their performance.”

“So what’s the best thing about working at LateRooms.com?” I asked. “The best thing is that it’s really laid back”, said Kirsten. “The people are great and are really easy to get on with. My manager has always been really supportive but has let me manage my own workload and come up with my own ideas” Jade chipped in, “I agree. It feels really relaxed here and it definitely isn’t corporate or boring”

And to our budding placement students out there, what do Kirsten and Jade think they need to succeed at LateRooms.com? “To work here you need to be friendly, confident and happy to ask questions and learn” said Kirsten, with Jade nodding in agreement.

So that’s Jade and Kirsten’s story.

With Jade and Kirsten coming to the end of their placements at the start of the summer, LateRooms.com are now getting ready for their next students.
