Meet the Team – Prem Neild

As it’s the start of term we thought it would be useful to introduce a few more members of the Placements Team.  This week is the turn of Prem, you may already recognise her as she’s regularly on hand at the Placements Desk.

Prem Neild

Hi, I’m Premila and I’m new to the Placements Administration team. I joined the team only a few weeks ago, after having worked with MMU’s Law School for over 4 years. I will be involved throughout the placements journey, from promoting opportunities through to checking that Placement Assessment Files are in order at the end of a placement. I love that I started this role at the beginning of a new academic year and can’t wait to start meeting everyone in the first few weeks of term. (more…)

I was so nervous on my first day I actually felt sick!

In our latest blog we hear from Laxmi Patel, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance.  Laxmi is 3 months into her placement and in this post she reflects on her first day nerves and offers advice for any fellow new starters.

Laxmi Patel

Hi I’m Laxmi and I am currently on a placement year at Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

I was actually asked to start my role earlier than September and I agreed to it because I didn’t really have much planned over the summer! So I started 3 months ago and I remember how nervous I was on my first day – I actually felt sick! But, my manager was very honest and welcoming and the team I’m surrounded by were also very kind – they actually made me feel a bit more relaxed!

My first day was all the standard introductory stuff so I wasn’t introduced to anything too new, apart from all the names that were thrown at me – but you’re really not expected to remember them all! (more…)

Meet the team – Carole Lee

We’ve had a few staffing changes in the Placements Team over the summer.  Our Placement and Projects Coordinator Shauna has been seconded into a different team (she’s still on campus so if you see her around say hi!). In this latest ‘Meet the Team’ post we hear from her replacement Carole Lee.  Carole’s spent the last 2 weeks getting to grips with all things placement and is raring to go for the start of term!

Carole Lee

Hi Carole, tell us about your job & what it involves

I recently joined the Placement Team as a Placements and Project Coordinator. I will be supporting 2nd year business students, helping them through 1-1s to develop CVs and covering letters as well as giving advice about interviews and coping with assessment centres. I will also be managing the placement process for MSc Human Resource Management students, liaising with employers and students to ensure the placements run smoothly. (more…)

Work etiquette – our guide to starting on placement

The leap from student life to office life can be daunting, with so many unwritten office rules how can you be sure you’re on the right track?  Hopefully our etiquette guide can help you through the first few weeks and help you stay on the right side of your colleagues and, more importantly, your boss.

Ask questions

If you’re unsure of anything, ask! You’re new, nobody expects you to know it all and it’s always better to ask and learn than to do something wrong. (more…)
