  • Make a shortlist

With a lot of application deadlines falling in December and January now’s the time to get logged on to our vacancy system and make a shortlist of placements you want to apply to.

Prioritise your shortlist by closing date and preference and give each application the time, effort and energy it deserves.

  • Set yourself a schedule

Try not to leave applications until the deadline day, take some pressure off and set yourself a schedule. Choosing days to focus on placement applications and days to take down time: lots of placements close on 31st December – do you really want to spend New Year’s Eve frantically applying?

  • Access resources

Lots of our resources are online and can be accessed even while university might be closed. Careers and Employability have a number of useful guides to help with your CV, upcoming interviews or assessment centres.

  • Research

Spend time looking at company websites and do your research on the organisations you want to apply to.  Companies want to know why you want to work for them. They can spot a cover letter that hasn’t been tailored or targeted – have you mentioned the organisation in your cover letter? Have you detailed the skills they specifically look for and how you match them.  Spend time researching so you can tailor and target your applications.

  • Enjoy your time off

And finally…we’re not expecting that placement applications will be the only thing you spend time on this Christmas make sure you set some the aside to enjoy the festive season.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Placement Team
